Beaconsfield

A magnificent house deserves a magnificent garden, but in 2010, when Vigor Construction received a call from a Client living in one of the most prestigious, prominent locations in Beaconsfield, Bucks, her rear garden was definitely the poor relation. With the Client keen to put her property up for sale, she had been advised by the local Estate Agent to seriously consider revamping the garden, as it's rather tardy, neglected condition at the time was detracting from the property's appeal as a family concern and was adversely affecting it's saleability and value.

Our Work

When Vigor Construction arrived on site, they found the rear garden set high above a huge patio area directly backing the strikingly handsome house, with the ground sloping accutely to such an extent that access was extremely difficult and walking from one side to the other, dangerous and precarious. Strewn in bamboo, dead trees, stumps, roots and weeds, the whole area seemed dark, dingy and depressing and was in desperate need of imaginative and inspiring landscaping design. Briefed by the Client with creating a play area for young children on one side and a private, quiet space for adults on the other side, with quick and easy access between these two punctuation marks, the budget was alas, limited, not limitless!

Bringing on board their award winning garden designer and long-term collaborator, Vigor Construction set about the precarious task of excavating the ground with their fleet of diggers to create a winding, 'secret' pathway and thinning out the trees and thicket to release a flood of natural light to cascade in. Then over 200 tonnes of top soil was imported to take out the sharp gradient in the terrain, retained by a wall constructed of over 250 re-claimed railway sleepers, to give an authentic and rustic look befitting of a garden hideaway. With a high performance, bespoke irrigation system implemented to maintain a planting scheme carefully chosen to explode in colour at different times of the year and the laying of high quality turfing, the garden was already benefitting from a greater sense of light and space.

The play area was then created on one side with a huge smattering of evironment friendly play bark, low in maintenance and high in safety; accessible by steps made out of the re-claimed railway sleepers spiralling up and round from the connecting pathway, now completed covered in crushed plum slate, scattered not only for effect but to ensure safe passage. On the other side, the same sequence of steps led eventually to an exclusively manufactured Arbour seat, strategicially positioned in the most secluded, tranquil part of the garden. With Vigor Construction electricians on hand to install a high spec garden lighting rig and apply a truly magical finish, the Client was finally able to enjoy a long and very satisfying view of her entire estate, either by day or night.

Not only was the Client speechless when she inspected the job upon completion, the Estate Agent was too, by all accounts a first!!
